HYDERABAD:Solar power and green energy continue to remain firmly etched in the agenda of the Telangana government as a majority of the exhibitors displayed an array of electrical products and solutions based on solar energy at the Electri Expo & Renew Expo 2015 which began at Hitex, Madhapur, here on Thursday.

The three-day exhibition features about 50 stalls showcasing numerous solar products, including solar panels, batteries and air-conditioners, apart from LED lights, electric wires and other equipments. With the state government offering subsidies in an attempt to promote solar energy, the expo has numerous solar products.

“There has been a tremendous increase in the number of people seeking to opt for solar power and we have received over 700 entries. Yet, a lot of citizens are unaware of the subsidies the government is offering, how to avail them and the  procedure involved,” said G Suresh Babu, an exhibitor with Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL).

“This is a wonderful platform to help create awareness about the benefits of solar power and the subsidies which the government is offering to promote it,” he added.

With an above average response on the opening day, exhibitors hope to cash in during the three-day expo and further promote green energy. Solar powered air-conditioners are one of the major attractions to the visitors.

“Based on our calculations, one can save Rs 52,885 by opting for a solar air-conditioner as opposed to a normal air-conditioner. A solar AC consumes just a third of the power a normal AC consumes and covers a larger area providing a better cooling effect,” pointed out Manuel, an exhibitor with TITAN Power Grid. Several stalls displayed LED lights for both commercial and residential use. Some stalls also included LED lights for traffic signals.

Amazed visitors lauded the approach to encourage solar power and were thrilled to see the variety on display. “I need a few solar panels and other equipments and I am here to see what is available and compare it with the market. While I am still undecided on what to purchase, I  am delighted to see initiatives being taken to promote solar energy,” expressed Hima, a visitor who works with a construction company.

However, several visitors were unhappy with the pricing on the solar panels despite subsidies on offer. “A solar panel, after a subsidy of Rs 1 lakh, is available for Rs 1,63,000 for 1 KW. I feel the price they are quoting is way too high and you get the same thing for Rs 1.25 lakh in Nagpur,” noted Mukesh Agarwal, another visitor.
